Systematics and Biodiversity: Concepts and Prospects Workshop was held. This workshop brought together historians, philosophers and systematists around a set of conceptual issues that are central to systematics and taxonomy. It addressed the following questions:

  • Is there a single, empirically defensible species concept that applies across all of life? If not, what set of concepts should be adopted?
  • What is, or should be, the 'unit' of biodiversity?
  • What is the appropriate role of systematics and taxonomy among the sciences of biodiversity?
